This year the festival is pleased to host two Jazz Jam Sessions following the successful format of the Blues in The Pews, held once a month in Highbridge, Somerset. 

This open curated Jazz Jam will be offered at two points over the festival weekend. It will be supported by a house band of experienced performers to support attendees who wish to participate. This is an inclusive, supportive, and fun model that also ensures a quality experience for all involved. It allows for more experienced participants to shine with a supportive rhythm section and less experienced people to sit in alongside the house band and be guided along.

How will it work?

Performing slots for the weekend sessions can be booked online. It may be possible for ‘walk-ins’ to sign up on the day, provided the pre-booked slots have not all gone, a sheet will be provided at the start of the event - however to guarantee your space we recommend you book now!

There will be a running order in a folder that walk-ins can sign up for the last few slots, 30 minute sign-up and prep-time for the house band - who for this session will be Superlocrian, followed by a 2 hour session (inc breaks) hosted by Superlocrian.

Packed with talented and experienced jazz educators (from Wells Cathedral School to the Royal College of Music), members of Superlocrian will work with musicians of all ages to develop their ensemble playing and improvisation skills.

The workshop will be focussed around working on some of Superlocrian’s “innovative arrangements and compositions” (Katie Derham, BBC Radio 3) with a few to a performance with the band during the afternoon concert and jam session.

We will particularly focus on developing a good time feel, producing a quality sound, developing style and how to work in different instrumental line-ups.

This workshop will be open to horn players of all ages of approx. Grade 3 standard and above, with something fun and educational for everyone at every level.

All Bb Wind Instruments (Trumpet/Cornet/Flugelhorn/Clarinet/Soprano/Tenor Saxophone)
All Eb Wind Instruments (Alto/Baritone Saxophone)

Please note:

• Only participating musicians need to sign up for the session - no need for audience members to register for this event.
• It is highly recommended you sign up to this session in advance to ensure your place.
• You should be available at the start of the session and the host will call you up to the stage. 
• Please be prepared to use the simple backline offered at the venue as there is no time to PAT check your equipment. 
• Microphones, drums, guitar/bass amp and keyboard/piano will all be provided at the venue. 
• Please bring your own guitar/bass/sax/trumpet/drums sticks etc.
